Don’t Choose Between Going To The Gym Or A Hike….

Take Your Gym With You and Do
Both!

The day is sunny and warm and you just want to get outside. You have not worked out at the gym with weights in a couple of days, so you are torn between the two choices.

Now you can do both at the same time!! Just take a long an exercise band with handles. I use some simple exercises like this single leg balance with a straight arm pull and leg / hip extension to warm up for my hikes. Doing 8–10 reps really slow, and holding the pose for at least 2 counts creates a high intensity full body strength workout. Choose two moves to warm up and get some amazing strength into your day. The band is an easy travel partner to do more at the top of your hike, or just leave in the car.

This is another good one. Lat pull with a lunge. Going slowly using 4 counts to go into the move, hold for 2 counts, exit out of the move with 4 counts. Alternate the legs.

Great warm up and these exercises use all 650 muscles, so you are in The 650 Muscle Club and are creating more effective workouts! They are also great counter moves for being at the computer all day!

I try to find a branch or fence post to use. I look for smooth surfaces, but if I can’t find one, I use a bandanna or t shirt to wrap around the branch. Then put the band around the fence or branch.

If you don’t have a band, pick up some rocks and create moves as you would with weights in a gym. Add balance by standing on one leg. You can even throw the rocks and run after them as you would a med ball in the gym.

This is an opportunity to add a brand new training element to your routine. It is fun and effective! The more variety you add to any movement the better! You are creating a more efficient and productive way to move your body and stimulate your muscles and mind.

Get out there and enjoy the sunshine and never feel guilty about missing a strength workout again!
